Per the Koch DuraKleen V15 & V8 Bulletin (Nov 2024), the Koch DuraKleen V8 is a MERV 8 pleated V-cell activated carbon filter engineered for combined particulate and gas-phase filtration. The DuraKleen V8 uses premium grade granular 60% activated coconut shell carbon, encapsulated in pleated media packs between two synthetic layers, for effective removal of odors, VOCs, diesel exhaust, acid gases, ammonia, and amines. With 0.23″ w.g. initial resistance at 500 FPM, the V8 balances gas-phase capacity with airflow performance.
What you get: pleated V-cell carbon filters, sold by the case
Each variant is a complete DuraKleen V8 pleated V-cell filter with a recyclable high-impact polystyrene frame, single header configuration, premium coconut shell activated carbon encapsulated in synthetic pleated media packs. All variants are 12″ deep:
- 24″x24″x12″ — 7 lbs carbon, Single filter per case
- 20″x24″x12″ — 5.5 lbs carbon, Single filter per case
- 20″x20″x12″ — additional size — carbon load proportional to face area, Single filter per case
- 12″x24″x12″ — 3.5 lbs carbon, Case of 2
The 20″x20″x12″ size is stocked by RTF beyond Koch's published table (which lists 24x24x12, 20x24x12, and 12x24x12 only). It uses the same DuraKleen V construction at proportional carbon load.
Important: DuraKleen V vs DuraKleen (CPS) — two distinct product lines
Koch produces two filter lines that share the "DuraKleen" name but use different carbon technology and serve different applications:
- DuraKleen V8 (this product): Pleated media packs encapsulating premium coconut shell granular carbon between two synthetic layers. Plastic (high-impact polystyrene) frame. Available in MERV 8 and MERV 15. SKU prefix 111-810 (V8) or 111-811 (V15). Use for combined particulate + gas-phase filtration in airports, industrial facilities, chemical plants, and office buildings.
- DuraKleen (CPS technology): Celbond Particulate Structure (CPS) media with 500 gsm of 20x50 mesh activated carbon suspended in a 3D bicomponent fiber network. Plastic and metal frame. Available in three header configurations (Single Header, Box Style/No Header, Double Header) and MERV 8 or MERV 15. SKU prefix 112-685/689/687/684/686. Use for sub-ppm airborne molecular contamination (AMC) and polishing filtration in cleanrooms, semiconductor, museums, and pharmaceutical.
If you're unsure which DuraKleen line fits your application, contact RTF support — the product name is shared, but the construction and ideal use cases differ.

Performance data (Koch DuraKleen V series)
| Efficiency Tier | Initial Resistance @ 500 FPM | Final Resistance | MERV Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| DuraKleen V8 | 0.23″ w.g. | 1.5″ w.g. | MERV 8 |
| DuraKleen V15 | 0.40″ w.g. | 1.5″ w.g. | MERV 15 |
The V8 variant (this product) is highlighted above. The MERV 15 layer is denser than the MERV 8 layer, which is why the V15 has higher initial resistance (0.40″ vs 0.23″). Verify your HVAC system can handle the resistance before specifying.
Targeted contaminants and gases (per Koch)
Per Koch's features list, DuraKleen V is designed for effective removal of:
- Odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- Diesel exhaust
- Acid gases
- Ammonia
- Amines
The combination of premium coconut shell carbon and pleated media architecture targets these specific gas-phase contaminants alongside MERV 8 particulate capture.
Contaminants effectively controlled by activated carbon
Premium 60% activated coconut shell carbon effectively adsorbs a broad spectrum of gas-phase contaminants. Categories well-controlled include:
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and solvents: acetone, toluene, xylene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, mineral spirits
- Chlorinated compounds: carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, ethylene dichloride, chlorobenzene

Applications
DuraKleen V is specified for:
- Airports
- Industrial facilities
- Chemical plants
- Office buildings
- And other commercial air filtration systems where combined particulate and gas-phase adsorption is required at MERV 8 efficiency
DuraKleen V8 vs V15 — choosing your tier
Koch produces DuraKleen V in two efficiency tiers. The choice comes down to particulate efficiency vs pressure drop:
- DuraKleen V8 (this product): MERV 8 particulate efficiency, 0.23″ w.g. initial resistance. Use when pressure-drop budget is tight or when standard MERV 8 particulate capture is sufficient. The lower pressure drop is the efficiency-tier advantage.
- DuraKleen V15: MERV 15 particulate efficiency, 0.40″ w.g. initial resistance. Captures fine particles including wildfire smoke and virus-laden aerosols alongside the gas-phase carbon performance. Use when fine particulate filtration matters alongside gas removal.
Other Koch carbon filtration options
- For maximum gas-phase capacity (18–26 lbs carbon per filter) without MERV 13+ requirements, see Koch DuraPure Standard Capacity or DuraPure High Capacity — honeycomb carbon cell construction.
- For sub-ppm AMC removal (cleanrooms, museums, semiconductor), see the Koch DuraKleen (CPS technology) family — bicomponent fiber media with 500 gsm 20x50 mesh carbon.
- For 1″/2″/4″ pleated panel form factors, see the OdorKleen family: OdorKleen ES (MERV 8), OdorKleen 250 (CarbonWeb MERV 8), OdorKleen 200/M13 (MERV 13), and OdorKleen 600 (MERV 10).
Sizing and ordering notes
- Sizes are nominal. Per Koch, actual dimensions follow the standard "1/2″ less than nominal" pattern in width and height (e.g., 24″x24″ nominal = approximately 23-3/8″x23-3/8″ actual). Confirm your filter housing accommodates the nominal size.
- 12″ deep filters require deep filter racks. These are commercial/industrial-scale filters — verify your filter housing accommodates 12″ depth before ordering.
- Single header configuration only — if your housing requires no-header (box style) or double-header configuration, see the DuraKleen CPS line which offers all three header configurations (physically different product, different carbon technology).
- Each variant ships in the case quantity shown. 24x24x12 and 20x24x12 ship as individual filters; 12x24x12 ships 2 per case; 20x20x12 ships individually.
- Replacement schedule: Drive by pressure drop curve and odor breakthrough. With Koch's recommended 1.5″ w.g. final resistance, estimate service life from your typical airflow. The V8 starts at 0.23″ w.g. clean.
- Operating temperature limit: 130°F continuous max. Lower than DuraPure or OdorKleen 600 (180°F), so not suitable for elevated-temperature applications.
- Carbon disposal: Spent carbon may have specific disposal requirements depending on captured contaminants and quantities. Follow your local hazardous waste regulations.

A filtration company, not a warehouse reseller
Family-founded in 2006, built on the back of 50 years of HVAC filtration experience. Two decades selling filters online — and we only stock what we'd put our own name behind.
Trusted manufacturers only
Every filter we sell comes from a manufacturer we've vetted — AAF Flanders, Koch, NaturalAire, PrimeShield, and a short list of others.
No marketplace-style third-party sellers swapping inventory. No overseas knockoffs relabeled with a domestic-sounding name.
Two decades online
RememberTheFilter.com has been selling HVAC filters online since 2006 — family-founded, founder-operated, and still run by the people who started it.

What customers say about Koch DuraKleen V8 (MERV 8 Pleated V-Cell Activated Carbon Filter)
Answers to the questions we get every day
From sizing and MERV ratings to bulk orders and subscriptions — here's what customers ask before they buy. For product-specific specs, check the description above.
How do I know what size filter I need?
The size is printed on the edge of your current filter. Read the nominal size — for example, 16x25x1 — and order that size. The actual filter will measure about 1/2″ less than the nominal size on each dimension. That's industry standard and is how the filter slides into the slot without binding.
If the printed size is worn off, measure the filter slot itself — not the old filter — and round up to the nearest standard size. Our How to Measure guide walks through it step by step.
What if the filter doesn't fit my system?
You're covered by our Filter Fit Guarantee. If the filter doesn't fit your system as expected, contact us within 30 days and we'll make it right — including custom-sized replacements for non-standard slots. One flat $30 fee covers exchanges under the guarantee, and we'll walk through sizing with you so the replacement fits the first time.
Do you offer custom filter sizes?
Custom filters are made to specification down to 1/8″ precision — useful for older homes, clinical spaces, schools, and commercial AHUs with non-standard slot dimensions. Available in every MERV rating from 1–4 through 13, plus washable and extended-surface options.
If you don't see your size listed in our standard lineup, contact us or request a quote and we'll confirm what's available in the media and efficiency you need.
What is a MERV rating and which one do I need?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is the industry-standard scale for how effectively a filter captures airborne particles. Higher numbers capture smaller particles. Most homes do well on MERV 8 to MERV 11. MERV 13 is the step up for pets, allergies, or wildfire smoke exposure — if your HVAC system supports it.
The MERV Rating Explained guide has the full breakdown, or take the 60-second MERV quiz for a personalized recommendation.
Will a higher MERV filter hurt my HVAC system?
Not when it's matched properly. Higher MERV filters do add airflow resistance, but most modern furnaces and air handlers handle MERV 11 comfortably, and many support MERV 13 — especially systems with 4″ or deeper media cabinets. The filter slot depth matters as much as the MERV rating.
Older systems (pre-2000) or tight 1″ slots may struggle with MERV 13. If airflow feels weak from vents, the blower sounds strained, or the coil ices up, step back down to MERV 10 or MERV 11. When in doubt, upgrade in steps — MERV 8 → 11 → 13 — and monitor for a cycle before moving up again.
What's the difference between MERV, MPR, and FPR ratings?
MERV is the universal industry standard, published through ASHRAE 52.2 testing and used by HVAC professionals worldwide. MPR (Micro-Particle Rating) is 3M's internal scale for their Filtrete line. FPR (Filter Performance Rating) is Home Depot's proprietary rating for filters sold in their stores.
MPR and FPR roughly correlate to MERV within their own brand lineups, but they aren't directly comparable across retailers. A Filtrete MPR 1900 is roughly MERV 13; an FPR 10 is also roughly MERV 13. Always check the MERV rating for an apples-to-apples comparison.
What is pleated filter media made out of?
Pleated filter media is a synthetic nonwoven fabric — most often polyester, sometimes a cotton-polyester blend — pleated over a supporting frame of galvanized wire or paperboard. The pleats add surface area, and the frame holds them open so the media keeps its shape under airflow.
How fast will my filter ship?
Standard stocked filters ship within 1–2 business days from the warehouse nearest to your shipping address. Most orders arrive in 2–5 business days via UPS or FedEx. Custom-sized filters are made to order and have their own production lead time listed in the product description.
Current production and shipping timelines are always live on our production schedule page.
Do you ship to Alaska, Hawaii, or PO boxes?
We ship to Alaska and Hawaii — shipping is calculated at checkout based on the address. Free shipping on orders $50+ applies to the lower 48 contiguous states only; AK and HI orders ship at carrier rates.
PO boxes cannot be accepted. Filter boxes are physically oversized and our carriers (UPS and FedEx) won't deliver to PO boxes at this size. You'll need a street address, business address, or pickup location for delivery.
Can I return or exchange a filter I don't need?
Unopened stocked filters can be returned within 30 days under our refund policy. Custom-sized filters are made to your specification and aren't returnable unless they arrived damaged or incorrectly sized from us.
If a filter arrives damaged or doesn't match what was ordered, submit a claim and we'll replace it — no back-and-forth.
How does the subscribe & save option work?
Most filters ship on recurring delivery at a 10% discount — cadences from every month through every 6 months, plus an annual option at 5% off. Pick the interval that matches your change-out schedule on the product page, and we'll auto-ship on time with no reordering required.
You're only charged when an order ships, and the discount applies to every delivery — not just the first one.
Can I pause, skip, or change my subscription?
Yes, any time. Pause, skip a delivery, change the cadence, swap the filter, update the shipping address, or cancel entirely — all from your account dashboard. No emails required, no hold times, no cancellation fees. See our subscription policy for the full details.
Do you offer bulk pricing for schools, clinics, or property managers?
Yes — bulk and volume pricing is available for facilities, multifamily properties, fleets, and any organization ordering in standing rotation. We work with schools, clinics, property management companies, government agencies, and industrial facilities on recurring orders with negotiated pricing.
Request a quote with your filter specs and estimated annual volume, or visit our Commercial Services page to see the full commercial lineup.
Are you set up for tax-exempt and government purchases?
Yes. We work with schools, government agencies, non-profits, and resale-exempt buyers regularly. Submit your certificate through our tax-exempt purchases page and we'll set up your account so future orders ship tax-free with no repeated paperwork. Purchase orders and government procurement are supported for established accounts.
Are these genuine name-brand filters?
Yes. Every filter we stock comes from a manufacturer we've vetted — AAF Flanders, Koch, NaturalAire, PrimeShield, and a short list of others. We don't operate as a marketplace, so there's no third-party seller swapping inventory behind the listing.
If you've had issues with counterfeit or low-quality filters from other sellers, that's one of the reasons customers switch to us. Real brands, same specs every time, same source every time.
