Refrigerator Water & Air Filters

Most manufacturers recommend replacing a refrigerator water filter every six months, or sooner if you notice a drop in flow rate or a change in taste. Households on well water or with heavier sediment may need to replace more frequently.

OEM cartridges (Frigidaire PureSource, Whirlpool EveryDrop®, GE MWF, etc.) are produced by the original equipment manufacturer. EarthSmart compatible cartridges fit the exact same housings and use NSF-tested filtration media, but are typically a lower cost per replacement. Both are valid replacements — the choice usually comes down to budget and brand preference.

Many newer refrigerators include a small produce-keeper or freshness air filter inside the fresh-food compartment, separate from the water filter. It helps reduce ethylene gas and food odors. LG (LT120F / EarthSmart AF-2) and combo kits from Frigidaire/Electrolux are common examples. Replace the air filter every six months, alongside or independently of the water filter.

The part number is almost always printed on the filter cartridge itself. Pull the existing filter out (twist or push-release, depending on model) and look for codes like MWF, LT700P, WF3CB, EPTWFU01, HAFCIN, or "EveryDrop Filter 1." If the cartridge isn't labeled, check inside the filter housing or your refrigerator's owner's manual.

Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act in the United States, a manufacturer cannot void your refrigerator warranty solely for using a compatible replacement filter that fits properly and meets the same standards as the OEM cartridge.
