How to choose your Filtrete tier

Higher MPR isn't always better. The right Filtrete depends on what you're filtering, what your HVAC system can handle, and how often you want to change filters.

For most homes

MPR 700 (MERV 8) or MPR 1000 (MERV 11)

Standard residential efficiency for households without specific allergy or pet concerns. Captures dust, pollen, and mites without straining typical HVAC systems. The right starting point if you don't know where to start.

Pets in the home

MPR 1000 or MPR 1500

Pet dander is a fine particle that lower-MPR filters miss. Step up to MPR 1000 for one or two pets, MPR 1500 for multiple shedders or short-haired breeds that produce more dander.

Allergies or asthma

MPR 1500 or MPR 1900

Higher MPR captures the smaller particles allergy-sensitive occupants react to — pollen fragments, microscopic mold, fine dust. MPR 1900 (MERV 13) is the residential ceiling; verify your HVAC system handles it.

Whole-house media cabinet

MPR 1550 · 4″, 5″, or 6″ deep

If you have a 4–6″ filter cabinet on your air handler, deep-bed Filtrete delivers high efficiency with significantly less airflow restriction than 1″ filters — and lasts 6–12 months instead of 90 days.

Wildfire smoke region

MPR 1900 (MERV 13)

Wildfire smoke particles are submicron — you need MERV 13 (MPR 1900) or higher to capture them meaningfully. Run the system fan continuously during smoke events for best results, and have backup filters on hand.

MPR vs MERV vs FPR — how the ratings compare

Three different rating systems for the same thing. Use this table to translate between Filtrete (MPR), the universal standard (MERV), and Home Depot's brand (FPR).

Which Filtrete MPR is right for me?

How do I know I'm getting genuine Filtrete?

Every Filtrete on this collection is 3M-manufactured and ships in original sealed 3M packaging. We source through our authorized distribution channel, not a marketplace. Why is Filtrete sold by the case instead of singles?

3M ships Filtrete to retailers in sealed factory cases — usually 4 filters per case for 1″ sizes, 2 filters per case for some 4–6″ sizes. Selling by the case keeps original 3M packaging sealed all the way to your door. A typical year of filter changes for a single home is roughly one case, so buying by the case usually means one purchase, not four.

What's the difference between MPR 1500 and MPR 1550?

MPR 1500 is Filtrete's standard 1″ pleated allergen filter (MERV 12). MPR 1550 is the deep-bed version — 4–6″ thick — for whole-house media cabinets. Same approximate efficiency, but the deep-bed format has dramatically more pleat surface area, which means lower airflow restriction and 6–12 month service intervals instead of 90 days. Match the depth to your filter slot.

Does my HVAC system support MPR 1900 (MERV 13)?

Most modern furnaces and air handlers built after 2000 handle MERV 13 in a 1″ format, but the airflow restriction is meaningful — especially in older systems or tight return slots. Signs you've gone too high: weak vent airflow, blower running longer or louder, evaporator coil icing in summer, or higher utility bills.

If any of those show up after switching, drop back to MPR 1500 (MERV 12) or move to a 4″ deep-bed format which delivers high efficiency at lower restriction.

Do you offer custom Filtrete sizes?

Filtrete is sold by 3M in standard residential sizes only — non-standard slot dimensions aren't available in the Filtrete line. We can usually match the same MERV-equivalent performance through one of our other manufacturers in a custom size made to exact slot dimensions, or request a quote with your specs.

Can I subscribe and save on Filtrete?
