Washable Electrostatic HVAC Filters

Washable electrostatic filters are a permanent alternative to disposable pleated or fiberglass panels. Instead of throwing the filter out every 60–90 days, you pull it, rinse it with a garden hose, let it dry, and reinstall it. One filter lasts years.

How They Work

The filter media is a woven synthetic designed to build up a static electrical charge as air moves through it. That charge attracts and holds airborne particles—dust, pollen, lint, pet dander—until you wash them off. Most washable filters rate around MERV 4–8 depending on construction.

When Washable Makes Sense

• You want to eliminate disposable-filter waste
• You travel seasonally and don't want to worry about subscription timing
• You own the home and can amortize the upfront cost over 5–10 years
• You have a metal-frame filter rack that can accept the slightly stiffer washable frame

When to Skip Washable

If you have severe allergies, asthma, or anyone immunocompromised, the MERV 4–8 range of most washable filters won't protect as well as a disposable MERV 13. Washable is a durability and waste-reduction choice, not an air-quality upgrade.

Care Instructions

1. Pull the filter when your schedule says (typically every 30–60 days)
2. Rinse with a garden hose from the clean side outward
3. Air dry completely before reinstalling—never install damp
4. Replace every 5–10 years depending on use and wear
