We can’t retroactively credit sales tax on orders placed before your account is flagged tax-exempt. If you’re new, send your certificate first and wait for the confirmation email — then check out tax-free. Commercial buyers on net terms can coordinate with your rep to align the PO and setup if you’re under a deadline.

Straight answers to the most common questions about setup and use.

How long does tax-exempt setup take?

Typically same business day during support hours (Monday–Friday 6 AM – 5 PM PST). We review the certificate, flag your account, and email you when it’s ready. Complex multi-state or government exemptions can take 1–2 business days if we need to verify something.

What types of certificates do you accept?

All valid state-issued exemption certificates and federal exemption letters — including resale certificates, non-profit (501(c)(3)) exemptions, government purchase exemption letters, farm/agricultural certificates, Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) certificates, Multi-state Tax Commission (MTC) certificates, and tribal exemptions. If your state has a specific format, send whatever they issued you.

I ship to multiple states. Do I need separate certificates?

Depends on the certificate. A multi-state certificate (like the MTC uniform certificate) covers multiple states at once. State-specific certificates only cover the state they’re issued in — if you need exemption in Texas and Florida, send both certificates. We’ll apply exemption only in the state(s) where you have a valid certificate on file.

Do I need to resubmit every year?

Only if your certificate has an expiration date or your status changes. Many state exemption certificates are good until revoked — those stay on file permanently. Certificates with an expiration date or annual renewal requirement (common for resale certs in some states) should be resubmitted when renewed. If anything changes — name, EIN, tax status, address — send the updated certificate and we’ll refresh your file.

Can I use tax-exempt with a credit card?

Yes. Once your account is flagged tax-exempt, you can check out online with any supported payment method — credit card, ACH, PayPal, Amazon Pay, or purchase order if you have net terms set up. Tax is removed on the invoice regardless of payment method.

What if I ordered before my account was set up?

We can’t retroactively credit sales tax on orders placed before the tax-exempt flag was applied. If you’re mid-transaction and just realized this, contact us immediately — if the order hasn’t shipped yet, we may be able to cancel and rebook it under your exemption. After ship, the tax can’t be reversed.

Does tax-exempt apply to shipping charges too?

Depends on the state. Some states exempt shipping/freight when the underlying purchase is exempt; others tax shipping separately. We apply exemption based on your state’s rules — you’ll see the final tax breakdown on your invoice. For orders over $50 in the domestic U.S., shipping is free anyway.

Can multiple people in my organization order under one certificate?

Yes. The exemption applies to the organization, not one individual. Any buyer at your school, non-profit, or company can order under the flagged account — or you can have us flag multiple email accounts under the same organization. For larger buyers with multiple procurement people, we recommend the commercial account setup so your rep can manage it all in one place.
