Per the Koch OdorKleen 600 product bulletin, the Koch OdorKleen 600 is the highest-efficiency carbon/alumina pleated filter in the OdorKleen product family — a MERV 10 carbon/alumina pleated filter engineered for environments where specific gaseous contaminants need to be targeted, not just general odors. The OdorKleen 600 contains 592 gsm of granular activated carbon and activated alumina impregnated with potassium permanganate — a 50/50 blend of CTC 60 carbon and activated alumina with 5% potassium permanganate (KMnO4). This specific chemistry is designed to remove ammonia, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide — gases that activated carbon alone is less effective against.

CarbonWeb® gas-phase filtration technology
OdorKleen 600 uses CarbonWeb® technology — carbon-filled media fibers engineered for low resistance and high adsorption capacity:
- Carbon/alumina blend: 50/50 blend of CTC 60 granular activated carbon and activated alumina with 5% potassium permanganate (KMnO4). Per Koch, this combined chemistry has "nearly five million square feet of surface area per pound."
- Carbon load: 592 gsm — substantially higher than OdorKleen 250 (250 gsm) or standard carbon-impregnated pleated filters.
- Adsorption efficiency: The bonded carbon fibers use only approximately 1% of the carbon's surface area, leaving roughly 99% available for gas contaminant adsorption.
- Particulate capture layer: Polyester blend efficiency layer captures particulate contaminants. The combination of the carbon/alumina gas-phase media plus the polyester particulate layer gives the filter MERV 10 efficiency while maintaining low pressure drop.

Performance data by depth
| Filter Depth | Test Air Velocity | Initial Resistance | Recommended Final Resistance | Pleats / Linear Foot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1″ | 300 FPM | 0.32″ w.g. | 1.2″ w.g. | 15 |
| 2″ | 500 FPM | 0.45″ w.g. | 1.2″ w.g. | 14 |
| 4″ | 500 FPM | 0.44″ w.g. | 1.2″ w.g. | 9 |
Note the higher pleat density on 1″ (15 pleats per linear foot) and 2″ (14 pleats per linear foot) compared to OdorKleen ES and 250 (12 and 10 respectively at the same depths) — more pleats per foot means more media area for both particulate capture and gas-phase adsorption.
Targeted gaseous contaminants
Where activated carbon alone handles general VOCs, the OdorKleen 600's carbon plus alumina plus 5% potassium permanganate chemistry is engineered to specifically remove four gaseous contaminants:
- Ammonia (NH3): Alkaline gas common in pharmaceutical, agricultural, and laboratory environments. Activated alumina with KMnO4 provides the acid surface chemistry needed to capture ammonia — standard activated carbon does not adsorb ammonia effectively.
- Formaldehyde (HCHO): Off-gas from new construction materials, laminate adhesives, embalming, and some manufacturing processes. KMnO4 oxidizes formaldehyde to less harmful compounds.
- Sulfur dioxide (SO2): Combustion byproduct and industrial process contaminant. KMnO4 oxidation chemistry is particularly effective on sulfur compounds.
- Hydrogen sulfide (H2S): Rotten-egg odor at low concentrations, toxic at higher levels. Common in wastewater treatment, oil & gas, and certain industrial processes. KMnO4 oxidation handles H2S very effectively.
For sites with these specific contaminants, OdorKleen 600 outperforms standard carbon-only filters because activated carbon alone is weak on ammonia and slow on certain sulfur compounds.
Applications
OdorKleen 600 is specified for environments with heavy gas-phase contaminant loads and where specific gases need to be targeted:
- Chemical Storage
- Laboratories
- Museums and Archives
- Pharmaceutical
- Hospitals
- Airports
- Industrial Facilities
- Commercial Office Buildings
- Sports Arenas
- Smoking Lounges
- Casinos
- Laminate Adhesives (manufacturing)
- IAQ Emergency response
Choosing the right OdorKleen tier
Koch produces three carbon-impregnated pleated filters in the OdorKleen product family. Choosing between them depends on contaminant load, target gases, particulate efficiency requirements, and budget:
- OdorKleen 600 (this product): MERV 10, 592 gsm carbon/alumina blend with 5% KMnO4. Targets ammonia, formaldehyde, SO2, H2S specifically. Highest particulate efficiency in the family. Use when specific gaseous contaminants are the concern, not just general odors.
- OdorKleen 250: MERV 8, 250 gsm CarbonWeb® carbon with potassium permanganate alumina. General high-capacity carbon filter for heavy VOC loads. Use when you need substantial carbon capacity but don't need the higher MERV or specific gas chemistry of the 600.
- OdorKleen ES: MERV 8, basic carbon impregnation. Standard carbon-impregnation pleated filter for lighter contaminant loads. Use for office buildings, schools, and standard HVAC environments with light to moderate odor and VOC loads.
If you're unsure which tier fits your application, contact RTF support with your contaminant profile, target gases, and operating conditions, and we'll help match the right filter.
Sizing and ordering notes
- Sizes are nominal. Match nominal dimensions to your filter slot. Actual filter dimensions are typically 1/2″ less than nominal in width and height per the Multi-Pleat XL8 frame family standard.
- Carton qty varies by depth: 1″ ships 12 per case, 2″ ships 6 per case, 4″ ships 3 per case — reflecting both filter weight (heavier with more carbon) and shipping density (thicker filters take more space).
- Additional small sizes available: Per Koch, the OdorKleen 600 product line includes 12″x12″x1″ and 12″x12″x2″ sizes not stocked in this RTF lineup. Request a quote for these or for custom sizes.
- Replacement schedule: Standard MERV 10 maintenance interval applies, but odor breakthrough or specific-gas breakthrough is the practical end-of-life signal — if ammonia, formaldehyde, sulfur, or hydrogen sulfide odors return, the carbon and/or KMnO4 alumina has saturated regardless of pressure drop.
- Operating temperature: Continuous operation up to 180°F (93°C). Suitable for elevated-temperature HVAC applications.
- Disposal: Filters loaded with target gases (ammonia, formaldehyde, SO2, H2S) or other industrial contaminants may have specific disposal requirements depending on captured contaminants and quantities. Follow your local hazardous waste regulations.
- Frame is recyclable once stripped of the spent media.
- UL 900 classified — meets standard UL fire and flammability classification for HVAC air filters.

A filtration company, not a warehouse reseller
Family-founded in 2006, built on the back of 50 years of HVAC filtration experience. Two decades selling filters online — and we only stock what we'd put our own name behind.
Trusted manufacturers only
Every filter we sell comes from a manufacturer we've vetted — AAF Flanders, Koch, NaturalAire, PrimeShield, and a short list of others.
No marketplace-style third-party sellers swapping inventory. No overseas knockoffs relabeled with a domestic-sounding name.
Two decades online
RememberTheFilter.com has been selling HVAC filters online since 2006 — family-founded, founder-operated, and still run by the people who started it.
Schools, clinics, property managers, and homeowners have been ordering from us for years — some of them since before Amazon even sold filters.
Nationwide shipping network
Our distribution network ships from multiple U.S. locations — so most orders arrive faster than coast-to-coast routing would suggest.
Customer service is based in Lake Stevens, Washington — U.S.-based, reachable by phone, text, or email.
Buying this filter for a property, fleet, or facility?

What customers say about Koch OdorKleen 600 (CarbonWeb High-Efficiency MERV 10 Carbon Particulate Filter)
Answers to the questions we get every day
From sizing and MERV ratings to bulk orders and subscriptions — here's what customers ask before they buy. For product-specific specs, check the description above.
How do I know what size filter I need?
The size is printed on the edge of your current filter. Read the nominal size — for example, 16x25x1 — and order that size. The actual filter will measure about 1/2″ less than the nominal size on each dimension. That's industry standard and is how the filter slides into the slot without binding.
If the printed size is worn off, measure the filter slot itself — not the old filter — and round up to the nearest standard size. Our How to Measure guide walks through it step by step.
What if the filter doesn't fit my system?
You're covered by our Filter Fit Guarantee. If the filter doesn't fit your system as expected, contact us within 30 days and we'll make it right — including custom-sized replacements for non-standard slots. One flat $30 fee covers exchanges under the guarantee, and we'll walk through sizing with you so the replacement fits the first time.
Do you offer custom filter sizes?
Custom filters are made to specification down to 1/8″ precision — useful for older homes, clinical spaces, schools, and commercial AHUs with non-standard slot dimensions. Available in every MERV rating from 1–4 through 13, plus washable and extended-surface options.
If you don't see your size listed in our standard lineup, contact us or request a quote and we'll confirm what's available in the media and efficiency you need.
What is a MERV rating and which one do I need?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is the industry-standard scale for how effectively a filter captures airborne particles. Higher numbers capture smaller particles. Most homes do well on MERV 8 to MERV 11. MERV 13 is the step up for pets, allergies, or wildfire smoke exposure — if your HVAC system supports it.
The MERV Rating Explained guide has the full breakdown, or take the 60-second MERV quiz for a personalized recommendation.
Will a higher MERV filter hurt my HVAC system?
Not when it's matched properly. Higher MERV filters do add airflow resistance, but most modern furnaces and air handlers handle MERV 11 comfortably, and many support MERV 13 — especially systems with 4″ or deeper media cabinets. The filter slot depth matters as much as the MERV rating.
Older systems (pre-2000) or tight 1″ slots may struggle with MERV 13. If airflow feels weak from vents, the blower sounds strained, or the coil ices up, step back down to MERV 10 or MERV 11. When in doubt, upgrade in steps — MERV 8 → 11 → 13 — and monitor for a cycle before moving up again.
What's the difference between MERV, MPR, and FPR ratings?
MERV is the universal industry standard, published through ASHRAE 52.2 testing and used by HVAC professionals worldwide. MPR (Micro-Particle Rating) is 3M's internal scale for their Filtrete line. FPR (Filter Performance Rating) is Home Depot's proprietary rating for filters sold in their stores.
MPR and FPR roughly correlate to MERV within their own brand lineups, but they aren't directly comparable across retailers. A Filtrete MPR 1900 is roughly MERV 13; an FPR 10 is also roughly MERV 13. Always check the MERV rating for an apples-to-apples comparison.
What is pleated filter media made out of?
Pleated filter media is a synthetic nonwoven fabric — most often polyester, sometimes a cotton-polyester blend — pleated over a supporting frame of galvanized wire or paperboard. The pleats add surface area, and the frame holds them open so the media keeps its shape under airflow.
How fast will my filter ship?
Standard stocked filters ship within 1–2 business days from the warehouse nearest to your shipping address. Most orders arrive in 2–5 business days via UPS or FedEx. Custom-sized filters are made to order and have their own production lead time listed in the product description.
Current production and shipping timelines are always live on our production schedule page.
Do you ship to Alaska, Hawaii, or PO boxes?
We ship to Alaska and Hawaii — shipping is calculated at checkout based on the address. Free shipping on orders $50+ applies to the lower 48 contiguous states only; AK and HI orders ship at carrier rates.
PO boxes cannot be accepted. Filter boxes are physically oversized and our carriers (UPS and FedEx) won't deliver to PO boxes at this size. You'll need a street address, business address, or pickup location for delivery.
Can I return or exchange a filter I don't need?
Unopened stocked filters can be returned within 30 days under our refund policy. Custom-sized filters are made to your specification and aren't returnable unless they arrived damaged or incorrectly sized from us.
If a filter arrives damaged or doesn't match what was ordered, submit a claim and we'll replace it — no back-and-forth.
How does the subscribe & save option work?
Most filters ship on recurring delivery at a 10% discount — cadences from every month through every 6 months, plus an annual option at 5% off. Pick the interval that matches your change-out schedule on the product page, and we'll auto-ship on time with no reordering required.
You're only charged when an order ships, and the discount applies to every delivery — not just the first one.
Can I pause, skip, or change my subscription?
Yes, any time. Pause, skip a delivery, change the cadence, swap the filter, update the shipping address, or cancel entirely — all from your account dashboard. No emails required, no hold times, no cancellation fees. See our subscription policy for the full details.
Do you offer bulk pricing for schools, clinics, or property managers?
Yes — bulk and volume pricing is available for facilities, multifamily properties, fleets, and any organization ordering in standing rotation. We work with schools, clinics, property management companies, government agencies, and industrial facilities on recurring orders with negotiated pricing.
Request a quote with your filter specs and estimated annual volume, or visit our Commercial Services page to see the full commercial lineup.
Are you set up for tax-exempt and government purchases?
Yes. We work with schools, government agencies, non-profits, and resale-exempt buyers regularly. Submit your certificate through our tax-exempt purchases page and we'll set up your account so future orders ship tax-free with no repeated paperwork. Purchase orders and government procurement are supported for established accounts.
Are these genuine name-brand filters?
Yes. Every filter we stock comes from a manufacturer we've vetted — AAF Flanders, Koch, NaturalAire, PrimeShield, and a short list of others. We don't operate as a marketplace, so there's no third-party seller swapping inventory behind the listing.
If you've had issues with counterfeit or low-quality filters from other sellers, that's one of the reasons customers switch to us. Real brands, same specs every time, same source every time.
