Fiberglass filters let almost everything under about 10 microns pass through. That dust accumulates on your evaporator coil over months and years, forming an insulating layer that forces the system to work harder to transfer heat. When Fiberglass Still Makes Sense

- Pre-filtration stages in front of bag filters or higher-MERV final filters, where the fiberglass takes the hit on large debris and extends the life of the more expensive downstream filter.

- Light-load systems with very low static pressure capacity that genuinely can't handle pleated media.
- Property management portfolios where monthly turnover is part of the maintenance rhythm anyway.
Outside those cases, pleated almost always wins on total cost.
Choosing the Right Pleated Filter for Your Facility
Once you've decided to move off fiberglass, three decisions follow:
Depth (1″, 2″, 4″, or 5″)
Deeper filters last longer and have lower resistance per unit of MERV. If your filter rack can accommodate 4″ or 5″ filters, this is almost always the best long-term move. If you're locked into a 1″ slot, choose pleated 1″ over fiberglass 1″ every time.
MERV rating
Start with what your system was designed to handle:
- MERV 8 — Light commercial, warehouses, low-occupancy spaces.
- MERV 11 — Offices, retail, multi-tenant buildings, light industrial.
- MERV 13 — Schools, clinics, occupied office spaces, anywhere IAQ is part of the value proposition.
