The Maxi-Grid 550 is the antimicrobial, heavy-duty variant in the Maxi-Grid panel line — a 3-ply MERV 8 panel filter built around two key upgrades over the standard MG300: the media is treated with an antimicrobial agent to inhibit microbial growth on captured organic matter, and the internal support wire is heavy-duty for maximum frame rigidity in demanding installations. Initial pressure drop is 0.28″ w.g. at 400 FPM with a dust holding capacity of 268 grams at 1.5″ w.g., identical to the MG300. The right pick when the application calls for MERV 8 efficiency plus antimicrobial protection or heavy-duty handling characteristics.
Common Maxi-Grid construction
All Maxi-Grid Standard Panels share a common construction philosophy: internally-supported synthetic-media panel filters with a self-sealing frame design and steel internal support wire. The synthetic media handles high-moisture applications well, the progressively-dense media construction maximizes dust holding capacity, and the self-sealing design prevents air bypass at the frame edges. All four sub-lines (MG200, MG300, MG400, MG550) are sized to the same nominal dimensions and package 24 panels per case for efficient shipping and storage.
When Maxi-Grid MG550 is specified
-
Healthcare and clinical facilities — antimicrobial treatment is a meaningful upgrade where captured biological material would otherwise grow on the filter
-
Food processing and hospitality — antimicrobial protection in environments with elevated organic loading
-
High-moisture installations — humid and condensing environments where standard panel media might support microbial growth
-
Demanding commercial applications — the heavy-duty wire support adds rigidity for installations with rough handling or vibration
-
Long-cycle commercial HVAC — where antimicrobial protection extends practical service life between changeouts

What MERV 8 captures
Captures dust mite debris, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, and most household and office airborne dust. The standard residential and commercial efficiency for everyday indoor air quality, balancing capture performance with airflow.
Antimicrobial treatment
The MG550 media is treated with an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms on captured organic matter (dust, skin cells, pollen, etc.). This makes the MG550 a strong choice for installations where captured biological material would otherwise become a substrate for microbial growth over the filter’s service life — healthcare environments, food processing, hospitality, and any high-occupancy commercial building. The antimicrobial treatment protects the filter media itself; it does not actively kill airborne pathogens passing through the filter.
Choosing across the Maxi-Grid line
Koch offers four Maxi-Grid Standard Panel sub-lines, each tuned for a different application:
-
MG200 (MERV 7): Most economical, 3-ply, downstream tackifier. Equipment protection and prefilter applications.
-
MG300 (MERV 8): All-purpose workhorse, 3-ply, lowest pressure drop in the line, encapsulated tackifier. Standard commercial HVAC.
-
MG400 (MERV 11): Higher efficiency, 4-ply, higher pressure drop. Light-industrial and high-IAQ commercial.
-
MG550 (MERV 8): Antimicrobial-treated 3-ply with heavy-duty wire support. Healthcare, food processing, high-moisture sites.
Sizing and ordering notes
-
Sizes listed are nominal. Actual panel dimensions are slightly under nominal — standard for the industry. (Example: 10x20 nominal = 9-1/2 x 19-1/2 actual.)
-
Sold by the case. Each variant ships in a case of 24 panels — Koch’s space-saving packaging is roughly half the cube of standard 12-per-carton cardboard panels.
