Remember the Filter — App Support

Everything you need to get the most out of the app. Can’t find your answer? Email us at support@rememberthefilter.com — a real person reads every message, usually within one business day.

Getting started

Do I need an account?

No. There’s no sign-up, no login, and no password. Open the app and start tracking filters right away. Your information lives on your device, not on our servers.

Home or Business — which do I pick?

At first launch you choose My Home or My Business. Home keeps everything on one simple screen, organized by room. Business adds a portfolio view for tracking filters across multiple properties, units, and systems. You can switch modes anytime in Settings — your filters come with you.

What devices are supported?

Remember the Filter runs on iPhone with iOS 17 or later. It’s designed for portrait use on iPhone.

Adding & tracking filters

How do I add a filter?

Tap the + button and set the size on the wheels — width, height, and depth — then pick your MERV rating from the visual selector. No typing part numbers. You can give a filter a nickname like “Upstairs return” or “RTU‑4” when you track several of the same size.

My size isn’t a standard size. Can I still track it?

Yes. Turn on Custom size when adding a filter to enter fractional dimensions down to the ⅛ inch. When you reorder, we’ll take you to a search for that exact custom size.

Can I track refrigerator filters too?

Yes — choose the refrigerator option and track it by brand and model. Reordering opens a search for that fridge filter.

What is MERV, and should I use a higher number?

MERV measures how much a filter captures — higher numbers catch smaller particles. But higher isn’t always better: a denser filter can strain an older HVAC system by restricting airflow. We never tell you to “size up” your MERV. The app only ever reminds you to check or replace the same filter you already use. If you’re considering a MERV change, ask your HVAC technician what your system can handle.

Reminders

How do reminders work?

When you add a filter, you set how often it should be changed — in days, weeks, or months. The app schedules a reminder for you and counts down to the next change. When you swap the filter and tap Mark changed, the clock resets automatically.

What is the “smart schedule”?

It’s an optional, transparent estimate of when to check each filter. It considers your filter type, your home (pets, smoking, how many people), the season, your local air quality, and how the filter has actually looked at past changes. Every factor is shown in plain language — it’s an honest suggestion, never a hidden guess. When you tell the app how the old filter looked at each change, the estimate gets better over time.

Can I snooze a reminder?

Yes. If a filter is due but you can’t get to it, you can snooze the reminder and the app will nudge you again later.

I’m not getting notifications. What do I check?

  • Open iOS Settings → Notifications → Remember the Filter and make sure Allow Notifications is on.
  • The first time you add a filter, iOS asks permission to send reminders — if you tapped “Don’t Allow,” you can turn it back on in the step above.
  • Check that a reminder date is actually set on the filter (open the filter to see its next‑change countdown).
  • Reminders are local — they’re scheduled on your device and don’t need internet or an account. If you got a new phone, restore your backup (see below) so your schedule comes with you.

Air quality

How does the air quality feature work?

Enter a ZIP code in Settings and the Air tab shows your local Air Quality Index (AQI), a pollutant breakdown, pollen levels, and a multi‑day forecast. The app uses only the ZIP you type — it never requests or uses your device’s GPS location.

Where does the air data come from?

Air quality and pollen come from Google’s Air Quality and Pollen APIs, delivered through our own service and attributed in the app. Your ZIP resolves to a coarse, roughly city‑level area — it’s not tied to your identity and isn’t used to advertise to you.

What does air quality have to do with my filter?

Your HVAC filter captures airborne particles — things like PM2.5, PM10, smoke, and pollen. On smoky or high‑pollen days there’s more of that in the air, so your filter works harder. The app estimates that extra load and can move your reminder in a bit so you check the filter before it’s overdue.

Will a filter fix bad AQI?

Partly, and we’re honest about the limits. A filter captures particulates (PM2.5, PM10, smoke, pollen) — but it does not remove gases like ozone, nitrogen dioxide, or carbon monoxide. The app tells you which part of the day’s air your filter actually helps with, every time, so you’re never misled.

The Air tab says “Sample data.” Why?

That label means live air data couldn’t be loaded right then (for example, no internet, or no ZIP entered yet). Add a ZIP in Settings and make sure you’re online, and live data will replace the sample.

Reordering filters

How do I reorder?

Tap Shop or Reorder on any filter and the app opens your exact size at the Remember the Filter store, in a browser view inside the app. There’s no in‑app catalog to dig through — we hand the store your size so you land right on the correct product.

Is there a shopping list?

Yes. The app rolls up every size you track into a single list, so you can restock everything at once instead of one filter at a time.

Is there a first‑order discount?

New customers get a welcome offer — free shipping plus a discount on the first order — applied automatically when you reorder through the app.

For businesses & portfolios

How do I manage filters across multiple buildings?

In Business mode you get a portfolio dashboard organized by property, unit, and system. A “due this week” rounds list shows what needs attention, and search lets you jump straight to any filter.

What’s the “quick add”?

As you walk a building, quick‑add lets you drop in a filter and assign it to a building and unit on the spot — creating the property or unit inline if it doesn’t exist yet — without a lot of setup.

What is the pull list / bulk reorder?

The portfolio pull list rolls up every filter size across your properties with quantities and where each one goes. Reorder the whole list in bulk, or share it so someone can load the truck.

Can I scan an equipment nameplate?

Yes. Point the camera at a unit’s nameplate and the app reads the make, model, and serial on your device to pre‑fill an editable form. Nothing is uploaded — the text recognition runs locally.

Can I print labels and keep service records?

You can print QR/size labels for your filters, keep photo proof‑of‑service, view each filter’s change history, and export a CSV audit trail. Labels are laid out for standard 4"×2" sheets.

Backup, restore & moving to a new phone

My data is only on my device — how do I protect it?

Use Backup in Settings to export a file of all your data. iOS lets you save that file wherever you like — Files, iCloud Drive, or share it to a teammate. To move to a new phone or recover after a loss, install the app and restore from that file.

Can I hand a property off to another person?

Yes. You can share an individual property’s filters as a file, so a new technician or manager can import it and pick up where you left off — no shared account needed.

Privacy

The app has no accounts, no ads, and no third‑party tracking. Your filter data stays on your device; the only thing that leaves is a ZIP you enter for air quality. Full details are in our App Privacy Policy.
