Trion Air Bear & Whole-Home Media Filters

Air Bear is the industry-standard whole-home media filter cabinet — a 4″ or 5″ deep media filter installed in the return air duct just upstream of the furnace or air handler. Trion's original Air Bear cabinet design is now produced under the AAF Flanders brand, and the replacement filters cross-reference across virtually every whole-home media cabinet on the market: Trion Air Bear, Honeywell, Aprilaire, Space-Gard, Lennox Healthy Climate, and Carrier whole-home cabinets.

What Makes Whole-Home Media Different

Where standard 1″ and 2″ pleated filters live in the return grille or filter rack, whole-home media filters are 4″ or 5″ deep and live inside the furnace cabinet itself. The deeper media pack delivers 3–6× the filter life of a 1″ pleat, with significantly lower pressure drop. Most homeowners change a whole-home media filter once or twice a year instead of monthly. The depth also enables higher MERV ratings — MERV 11 and MERV 13 are common in this format without the airflow penalty of a 1″ deep filter.

MERV Options

  • MERV 8 — equipment protection plus basic IAQ, the standard whole-home spec

  • MERV 13 — virus carriers, smoke, fine particulate (CDC-recommended for residential infection control)

Whole-home media filters install in cabinets and require an existing media filter cabinet — they're not a drop-in replacement for a 1″ filter rack. If your system has only a 1″ slot at the return grille, you need a standard pleated filter instead. Call 1-866-469-8556 or request a quote.
