Every furnace filter has a printed arrow, and it exists for one reason: to show you which way the air flows through it. Point that arrow the wrong way and your filter can't do its job properly. Find the direction air is moving

A forced-air system constantly recirculates the air in your home to keep it at the temperature you set. The blower pushes heated or cooled air out through the supply vents, then pulls “spent” return air back toward the furnace to be conditioned again. The filter sits in the path of that returning air, right before it reaches the blower and heat exchanger. So the air always travels from the return duct or grille, through the filter, and into the furnace.

Position the arrow correctly

Stand in front of your furnace or return grille with the new filter in hand and look along the edge of the cardboard frame for the airflow arrow.

  • Filter in the furnace/air-handler cabinet: the arrow points into the furnace, away from the return duct feeding it.
  • Filter in a return-air grille (wall or ceiling): the arrow points into the wall or ceiling — the direction the air disappears as it heads back to the system.

Why the direction actually matters

A pleated filter is built to face the airflow a specific way. The wire backing and pleat geometry give the media structural support against the pressure of moving air, and the more open, dust-catching face is meant to greet the incoming air first. Install it backward and a few things go wrong:

  • Airflow suffers. A reversed filter can restrict flow, and reduced airflow forces the blower to work harder. That slows heating and cooling and pushes up your energy bills.

What if my filter doesn't have an arrow?

Some basic fiberglass panels are printed on only one side or have no marking at all. If there's no arrow, look for the more rigid wire mesh or the printed cardboard face — the wire-backed side generally faces the furnace (the direction of airflow). When in doubt, the smoother, more open face should greet the incoming return air.

Is it bad if I installed the filter backward?

It won't immediately damage your system, but it does reduce efficiency and airflow while you run it that way. Simply pull the filter, turn it so the arrow points toward the furnace, and reinsert it. No harm done as long as you correct it.
