What Is Pressure Drop In HVAC Systems?

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems are designed to provide comfortable indoor environments by regulating temperature, humidity and air quality in commercial and residential buildings. HVAC systems use air ducts to distribute air throughout a building or residence. One of the key factors that affects their performance is pressure drop.

Pressure drop is the decrease in air pressure that occurs as air flows through the HVAC system. It’s caused by frictional losses that occur as air passes through ducts, filters, dampers and other components of the system. Pressure drop is an important factor to consider in HVAC design and air filter selection because it affects the system's overall efficiency and performance.

There are several factors that contribute to pressure drop in a home or businesses HVAC system. One of the most significant is the size and shape of the ductwork. Ducts that are too small or have sharp bends will cause more frictional losses and higher pressure drops. Also, dirty air filters and clogged ducts can increase pressure drop by restricting airflow.

Air filters are an integral component to any HVAC system with the primary function being to protect the system. In regards to pressure drops they can be a contributing factor. Basic spun-glass or fiberglass filters are going to be the least restrictive and minimize pressure drop from a filter. Pleated filters can vary widely with many variables  impacting pressure drop on an HVAC system. For instance a MERV 8 rated filter from one manufacturer might have a different initial pressure drop from another manufacturer’s MERV 8 rated filter. AAF Flanders filters are the perfect example, they make a MERV 8 pleated filter that has the lowest pressure drop in the industry. So while similar filters can share a MERV rating this doesn’t mean they are created equal. This is why we only sell filters from trusted manufacturers like AAF Flanders.

Pressure drop can have a number of negative effects on HVAC systems. It can reduce the overall airflow through the system which can lead to reduced comfort levels and increased energy costs. High pressure drop can cause the HVAC system to work harder which can lead to increased wear and tear on equipment and higher maintenance costs.

To minimize pressure drop in HVAC systems it’s important to design the system with the appropriate ductwork size and shape and to use high-efficiency equipment. Regular maintenance including changing filters is critical in helping to reduce pressure drop.

By minimizing pressure drop you can improve the performance and efficiency of your HVAC systems, leading to greater comfort and energy savings.
