Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often from homeowners and facility managers.

How often should I change my HVAC filter?

For most homes, every 60 to 90 days is the standard recommendation for a pleated filter. If you have pets, allergies, or run your system heavily, lean toward 60 days. Fiberglass filters should be changed every 30 days. Commercial systems follow their own schedule based on usage and filter type — bag filters can last 6 to 12 months depending on load.

What MERV rating should I use at home?

MERV 8 is a solid baseline for homes without specific air quality concerns. MERV 11 is the sweet spot for most households — it captures pet dander, pollen, and mold spores without straining standard residential equipment. Step up to MERV 13 if anyone in the home has allergies, asthma, or if wildfire smoke is a regional concern.

What's the difference between pleated and fiberglass filters?

Fiberglass filters (MERV 1–4) are designed only to stop large debris from damaging your equipment. They don't capture pollen, dander, or smoke. Pleated filters (MERV 8–13+) use densely folded synthetic media with far more surface area, catching everything fiberglass catches plus the fine particles that affect indoor air quality. Pleated filters also last two to three times longer.

Can I get a custom-sized air filter?

Yes. Our Exact Filters® program builds any size down to 1/8 inch, in any MERV rating. This is ideal for older systems, built-in air returns, and commercial equipment where standard sizes don't fit. Most custom orders ship within a few business days.

Do you serve commercial and government customers?

Yes. We work with schools, clinics, hospitality groups, government facilities, and industrial sites across the U.S. Our commercial division offers volume pricing, purchase order billing, dedicated account support, and inventory tracking so you never run out of filters. Contact us to set up an account.

Will a higher MERV rating hurt my HVAC system?

In most modern residential systems, MERV 8 through MERV 13 will not cause airflow problems — as long as you replace the filter on schedule. The real airflow killer isn't the rating, it's a clogged filter left in place too long. If you have an older system or concerns about compatibility, our team can help you match a filter to your equipment.

Not sure which filter is right for you?

Our filtration specialists have 50+ years of combined experience. We'll match you to the right filter in minutes.
