Explaining the Different Types of HVAC Air Filters

HVAC filters are an important part of any home or business’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. They are designed to capture and remove airborne particles like dust, pollen and other allergens from indoor air. There are several different types of HVAC filters available, each with its own unique benefits and drawbacks.

The most energy efficient style of HVAC filter is the disposable fiberglass filter. These filters are made of a thin layer of fiberglass or spunglass fibers that are designed to capture and trap larger airborne particles like dust. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace making them a popular choice for many homeowners. One downfall is they are not very effective at capturing smaller particles, such as smoke and bacteria, plus they need to be replaced frequently with the average recommendation being 30 days.

The most popular type of HVAC filter is a pleated filter. Pleated filters are made of a layer of material usually polyester or cotton and are designed to capture smaller particles than the disposable fiberglass filters mentioned above. They are more expensive than the disposable filters, but they last longer and are more effective at capturing smaller particles. Improving air quality is the best reason to choose a pleated air filter. Pleated filters will have MERV ratings to help consumers understand what they will reduce from indoor air. The most common MERV ratings are MERV 8, MERV 10 and MERV 13.

A term that is sometimes used incorrectly is HEPA. Most often HEPA filters are found in hospitals and clean rooms where air quality is of the most importance. These filters are designed to capture the smallest particles. They are also one of the more expensive types of filter, but they are the most effective at capturing the smallest particles.

In conclusion, there are several different types of HVAC filters available each with its own unique benefits and drawbacks. It's important to choose the right HVAC filter for your home or business’s HVAC system in order to ensure that the air is cleaner with less airborne particles.
