📏 Sizing & Fit
How do I measure my furnace or AC filter?
Pull your existing filter and measure length, width, and depth in inches. Filters have two sizes: nominal (rounded, printed large on the frame — e.g., 16x25x1) and actual (exact, usually 1/4″–1/2″ smaller — e.g., 15½x24¾x¾). For standard off-the-shelf filters, order by nominal size. For custom filters, give us the exact size to 1/8″.
What's the difference between nominal and actual filter size?
Nominal size is rounded to whole inches for packaging and shelf sorting — like 16x25x1. Actual size is the precise manufactured dimensions, usually 1/4″ to 1/2″ smaller so the filter slides into the slot without binding. If your filter slot is labeled 16x25x1, order a 16x25x1 nominal filter. Only use actual dimensions when ordering a custom-cut filter.
Where is my HVAC filter located?
The filter sits somewhere in the return air path between the room vents and the air handler. Common locations: (1) inside the blower compartment of the furnace or air handler, accessed through a slide-out door or panel; (2) behind a large return-air grille on a wall or ceiling; (3) in a dedicated filter cabinet between the return duct and the air handler. Follow the return ducts back from the air handler until you hit a filter slot or grille.
Do you offer custom-sized filters?
Yes — we cut custom filters to any dimension down to 1/8″ precision. Submit the actual exact size you need (not the nominal/rounded size). Most MERV ratings are available as custom, including pleated MERV 8, MERV 11, and MERV 13.
What if I can't find a printed size on my old filter?
Measure the filter itself with a steel tape measure — length, width, and depth, to the nearest 1/8″. Round up to the nearest whole inch to get the nominal size (e.g., 15½x24¾x¾ rounds to 16x25x1). If the filter is missing entirely, measure the filter slot opening and subtract about 1/4″ from each side to get the filter's actual dimensions.
Which direction does my filter install?
The airflow arrow printed on the filter frame points toward the furnace or air handler — that is, away from the return duct. Air flows from the room, through the filter, and into the equipment. If there's no arrow but one side has a wire mesh or cardboard reinforcement, that reinforced side faces the air handler.
Some basic fiberglass filters are bi-directional and work either way, but when in doubt, follow the arrow.
Why does my new filter feel slightly smaller than the slot?
That's expected — filters are manufactured about 1/4″ to 1/2″ smaller than their nominal size so they can slide in and out without damage. A 16x25x1 filter actually measures roughly 15½x24¾x¾. If yours is so loose that air bypasses around the edges, it's either the wrong size or your slot is non-standard and needs a custom filter.
Can I use a filter that's slightly smaller than my slot?
No — gaps around the edges let air bypass the filter entirely, dumping dust straight onto your coil and blower. Always use the correct size. If the closest standard size is too small or too large, order a custom filter cut to your exact slot dimensions.
🎯 MERV Ratings & Filtration
What is a MERV rating?
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It's the industry-standard rating system for how effectively an air filter captures particles. Scale is 1–16 for residential/commercial filters — higher numbers capture smaller particles.
Which MERV rating is right for my home?
For most homes, MERV 11 is the sweet spot — strong filtration for pollen, pet dander, and most smoke particles without restricting airflow. MERV 8 is fine for homes without allergy concerns. MERV 13 is the choice for asthma, wildfire smoke, or severe allergies, but pairs best with a 4–5″ media cabinet. MERV 1–4 fiberglass is for equipment protection and maximum airflow.
What's the difference between MERV, FPR, and MPR ratings?
MERV is the true industry standard, used by HVAC professionals and ASHRAE. FPR (Filter Performance Rating) is proprietary to The Home Depot. MPR (Microparticle Performance Rating) is 3M's internal rating for Filtrete brand filters. FPR and MPR aren't directly comparable between brands — MERV is the only rating you can use to compare apples to apples.
Rough conversion: FPR 7 ≈ MERV 8, FPR 10 ≈ MERV 11, FPR 12 ≈ MERV 13. MPR 600 ≈ MERV 8, MPR 1500 ≈ MERV 11, MPR 2200 ≈ MERV 13.
Will a higher-MERV filter hurt my HVAC system?
A filter that's too restrictive can reduce airflow, strain the blower, and on AC systems can freeze the evaporator coil. Most residential systems handle up to MERV 11 in a 1″ slot without issue. MERV 13 in a 1″ slot needs shorter replacement intervals (every 30–60 days) or a 4–5″ media cabinet that drops the pressure back into safe range. If your installation manual lists a max MERV, respect it.
Do high-MERV filters help with allergies, pet dander, and mold spores?
Yes. MERV 11 captures pet dander, fine dust, mold spores, and pollen reliably. MERV 13 adds bacteria-sized particles and most wildfire smoke particulate. For serious allergy or asthma households, pair a MERV 11 or 13 HVAC filter with a standalone HEPA room air purifier in bedrooms — that combination outperforms either alone.
Can HVAC filters help with wildfire smoke?
MERV 13 is the recommended level for wildfire smoke — it captures the fine particulate (PM 2.5) that makes up most smoke. During active smoke events, check the filter weekly and replace as soon as it's visibly loaded. In heavy smoke, a filter can load in days instead of months.
Do HVAC filters remove viruses or bacteria?
MERV 13 filters capture some virus-carrying respiratory droplets and many bacteria-sized particles, but no residential HVAC filter fully removes airborne viruses. For pathogen reduction, MERV 13 filtration combined with higher outdoor air ventilation and standalone HEPA room purifiers is the standard recommendation from public health agencies like the CDC.
Why do MERV 1–4 filters start at MERV 1 and build to MERV 4?
Fiberglass media is inherently low-efficiency when clean — that's why it allows such high airflow. As the filter loads with lint and dust, the trapped particles themselves start filtering incoming air, so efficiency climbs from roughly MERV 1 when new to MERV 4 when loaded. These filters aren't "weak" — they're purpose-built for equipment protection and systems that require maximum airflow.
How often should I change my HVAC filter?
Rough rules: 1″ pleated MERV 8–11 every 60–90 days; 1″ MERV 13 every 30–60 days; 4″ or 5″ deep-pleat every 6–12 months; fiberglass MERV 1–4 every 30 days. Shorten all intervals for pet households, wildfire smoke, construction nearby, or heavy HVAC use. Write the install date on the filter frame with a Sharpie so you don't have to guess.
Is there a MERV quiz or tool to help me pick?

What's the difference between fiberglass and pleated filters?
Fiberglass filters use a flat layer of spun glass fibers. They're MERV 1–4, have the lowest airflow resistance of any disposable filter, and are built for equipment protection — catching lint, hair, and large dust. Pleated filters fold synthetic media into accordion pleats, creating far more surface area. They run MERV 8 through MERV 13 and are what most homes should use for indoor air quality.
Are washable filters as good as pleated ones?
They're different tools. Washable aluminum-frame filters run at the MERV 1–4 level — so they protect your equipment but don't improve indoor air quality much. Pleated MERV 8+ filters do a much better job on allergens and fine particles. Washable filters shine for odd sizes, vacation homes, or sustainability-focused buyers who don't want to keep buying disposables.
Can I use a true HEPA filter in my home HVAC system?
Not in a standard residential return slot. True HEPA filters (99.97% efficient at 0.3 microns) create so much resistance that they'll choke most home HVAC systems, causing frozen coils, short cycling, and blower damage. HEPA is designed for dedicated whole-home air purifier units or commercial setups built around them. For residential whole-house clean air, MERV 13 with a proper-depth cabinet is the safest high-efficiency option.
Are electrostatic filters better than pleated?
No — for residential HVAC, a quality pleated filter (MERV 11 or 13) outperforms a washable electrostatic filter on allergens and fine particles. Electrostatic filters rely on a static charge that degrades as the filter loads and as it gets washed. Pleated filters deliver consistent, verified MERV performance and are what we recommend for most homes with air quality concerns.

The original AAF Flanders EZ Flow line has been discontinued by the manufacturer in many sizes, and is being replaced by EZ Flow II. We carry the current EZ Flow II lineup for active sizes, and we'll flag discontinued sizes on the product page with the recommended replacement. Shop EZ Flow →
Do you offer activated carbon filters for odors?
Yes — we carry activated carbon pleated filters that combine particulate filtration with carbon media for odor and VOC reduction. These help with cooking odors, pet smells, smoke, and general off-gassing. Carbon media eventually saturates and stops absorbing, so follow the shorter replacement intervals noted on the product page.
⚙️ Technical & HVAC Performance
What is pressure drop and why does it matter?
Pressure drop is the resistance a filter creates to airflow, measured in inches of water column (in. w.c.). Higher pressure drop = more work for the blower, higher energy use, and potentially reduced airflow across the coil. Initial (clean filter) pressure drop under 0.2–0.3 in. w.c. is typical for most residential filters. Replace the filter before it reaches the manufacturer's final resistance rating (usually 0.5–1.0 in. w.c.).
What happens if my filter gets too dirty?
Restricted airflow causes a chain reaction: the blower works harder and uses more energy; airflow across the evaporator coil drops; the coil can freeze in cooling mode; the heat exchanger can overheat in heating mode; the system short-cycles; and over time the blower motor fails prematurely. A dirty filter is the single most common cause of "my HVAC isn't working right" service calls.
Do thicker filters (2″, 4″, 5″) reduce pressure drop?
Yes, significantly. A 4″ pleated filter has roughly 4–5× the media surface area of a 1″ filter at the same MERV rating. More surface area = lower face velocity through the media = lower pressure drop. That's why a 4″ MERV 13 can be safe in a system that couldn't handle a 1″ MERV 13.
Should I upgrade to a media filter cabinet?
If you want MERV 11 or MERV 13 filtration with long service life and no airflow penalty, a 4″ or 5″ media cabinet is the upgrade. Installation requires an HVAC technician to widen the return plenum opening. The filter cost savings (one filter per year instead of four to six) typically repays the install within 2–3 years.
How do I know if my filter is restricting airflow?
Signs include: weak airflow at the registers, noisy blower, short cycling (the system turns on and off rapidly), frozen evaporator coil in cooling mode, or an overheat shutoff in heating mode. If you suspect a problem, pull the filter out and run the system briefly — if performance returns to normal, your filter was the bottleneck. An HVAC tech can measure total external static pressure (TESP) to confirm.
Are your filters compatible with all HVAC systems?
Our filters work with nearly all standard residential and commercial forced-air systems — furnaces, central AC, heat pumps, and air handlers. The only compatibility rule that matters is airflow: verify your system's maximum recommended MERV rating before jumping to MERV 13, especially in a 1″ slot. Not sure? Ask a specialist →
What happens to filter efficiency as it loads with dust?
Counter-intuitively, filters actually capture particles more efficiently as they load — the trapped dust itself acts as additional filter media. But pressure drop also rises as the filter loads. The right replacement point is when pressure drop starts to hurt airflow, not when the filter stops filtering. For most 1″ pleated filters, that's roughly the 60–90 day mark with typical residential use.
What is face velocity and why does it matter?
Face velocity is the speed of air moving into the filter, measured in feet per minute (fpm). Most residential filters are designed for 300–500 fpm. Higher velocity = higher pressure drop and lower capture efficiency. That's why a deep-pleat 4″ filter outperforms a 1″ filter at the same MERV — more surface area drops face velocity into a range where the media works optimally.

✨ Quality, Brands & What Sets Us Apart
What makes RememberTheFilter.com different from big-box stores or Amazon?
Three things. First, we specialize in filtration — it's what we sell and what our team knows. Second, we only stock from trusted manufacturers — AAF Flanders, Koch, NaturalAire, our own PrimeShield line, and others — not overseas knockoffs relabeled with a domestic-sounding name. Third, we've been online since 2006 with 50+ years of combined HVAC filtration experience, so you can actually get expert help before and after the sale, not just a shopping cart.
Why do some cheap filters advertise the same MERV rating but perform worse?
Budget manufacturers often meet MERV benchmarks under ideal lab conditions but use skimpy media, fewer pleats, or flimsy frames that fail in real-world use. As the cheap filter loads, efficiency can drop below the claimed rating, pressure drop spikes faster, and warped frames let air bypass around the filter entirely. Premium brands engineer for consistent real-world performance over the full service life.
What are the signs of a low-quality filter?
Uneven or sparse pleats; a thin, brittle, or warped frame; visible gaps between the media and frame; media that feels flimsy or wispy; vague efficiency claims without MERV; and no indication of independent testing. Premium filters show tight, consistent pleating, a rigid frame, and publish MERV in line with ASHRAE 52.2 test methods.
Can a cheap filter damage my HVAC system?
Indirectly, yes. A flimsy or poorly-fitting filter lets unfiltered air bypass the frame, depositing dust directly on the evaporator coil, blower wheel, and motor. Over time that fouling reduces efficiency, drives up energy bills, and shortens equipment life. A well-built filter that fits properly protects your HVAC equipment — which is actually the original reason these filters exist, before indoor air quality became the dominant concern.
